The First Email
Greetings,
This mail is to invite you to take part in the creation of a new organization and be a part of making Detroit a great city once more. The concept of this organization was borne of conversations with former members of the Detroit Leadership Council and discovery of similar organizations in other cities.
The root of the organization lies in the recognized need for a place where people who want to build a great city can come together and through interaction make their ideas stronger.
We are the leaders of the future, the people that will shape Detroit for the coming years. We need a place to work together to ensure that the city overcomes its ills of racism, poverty, crime, and blight.
Many of you were included in this mail as former members of the DLC. This organization will also seek to bring together leaders but it will also be structured differently in order to allow us to take an active role in improving the city. This structure will be roughly based on a St. Louis organization called Metropolis St. Louis ( www.mstl.org ). They use projects created and driven by membership to accomplish anything from having a party to cleaning city parks to providing newcomers to St. Louis with an orientation course to the city. This structure would allow the organization to have a more broad and significant impact on the community.
The purpose of the organization will include the following:
- To bring together communities and leaders in order to promote an integrated approach to Detroit’s future
- To promote the city as a great place to live and work and to cultivate a strong community in the city
- To undertake projects that will promote economic, cultural, and social development within the city
We believe that with this model we can take advantage of our diversity, our heritage, and our creativity to help Detroit realize its potential as a great city. We will be having a meeting to talk about what the organization will do, what it will look like, and to form an initial group whose task it will be to get this organization up and running. We invite all those interested in the organization to come and join us for these initial discussions and if you want be part of the start-up group then you can sign-up at the meeting. Also, feel free to invite others that you might know who would be interested in getting involved with the effort.
The meeting will be May 16th and will be held at the Detroit Club (Corner of Fort & Cass) Hope to see you all there.
