Discussing Differences - A Dialogue for Detroit’s Future

This dialogue series asks 20 people from diverse backgrounds and experiences to gather together for 3, three-hour sessions to discuss issues of race, religion, sexuality and ethnicity, along with other cultural and social issues. The sessions are lead by trained facilitators.
Each session has a different objective. The first helps participants explore how personal values, beliefs, assumptions and experiences affect individuals’ attitudes and behaviors about their self and others. The second helps participants gain a greater understanding of subtle ways in which prejudice and discrimination take place in institutional settings. It will also help them identify forces that inhibit the building and/or maintaining of an inclusive, respectful environment. The third helps participants to identify and reach common agreement on the elements of an inclusive, respectful atmosphere. They will also develop initial action steps to remove the barriers and build support for an inclusive respectful community.
As supporters of the project, the Farbman Group have graciously offered use of their facilities as well as food for the participants since September 2005. “Since Detroit Synergy is similar to the Farbman Group in its dedication to the City of Detroit, we are incredibly pleased to serve as host for this special event,” said David Farbman, president and CEO of Farbman Group, Agent for New Center One. “Like Synergy, our company strives to generate positive perceptions about Detroit by building upon the city’s strengths while also playing a leading role in bringing about new and exciting resources and opportunities.”
