Tour Detroit on your bike! This leisurely, 40 mile police-escorted ride will occur at a pace of approximately 10-14 miles per hour, will explore some of the city’s historic areas, take in many of its most breathtaking sights, and provide bicyclists a unique opportunity to legally “take over” the streets of the Motor City. Sponsored by Miller Canfield, Visit Detroit, Greater Corktown Development Corporation, Burst, and Slow's, the Tour de Troit aims to raise awareness of biking as a mode of transportation, to publicize the growing greenways network in the City of Detroit and all of Southeastern Michigan, and to raise funds for Corktown-Mexicantown Greenlink. Pre-registration is available at tour-de-troit.org until September 13th. This a community event, separate from Detroit Synergy, that has received planning support and promotion by Detroit Synergy's Detroit Bikes! project. This year's Tour de Troit looks to be the biggest yet, and as such, well, Detroit Bikes! wants to provide a supportive role. Help is appreciated, with areas of assistance including registration in the morning, park clean up afterwards, during the ride behind the scenes work, food service work, and even a sag wagon driver. As you can see, being a volunteer does not mean that you have to be a cyclist. There is a mandatory volunteer meeting next Tuesday, September 16th at 8:00 pm "Upstairs" at the Park Bar -- 2040 Park Ave, Downtown Detroit -- where we will meet, divvy up duties, and get organized, followed by local fare. All volunteers will be entered into a raffle with great prizes provided by Kona Bikes, Canine to Five, Pure Detroit, Bureau of Urban Living, Bike Tech, Wheelhouse Detroit and more! Plus, we have a great wrap party at Eph’s Deli when all the dust settles.
